WEBSITE HELD HOSTAGE! Is your website safe? Who has your passwords?

Recently it came to our attention that a local business owners website has been taken hostage by an outsourced, third party SEO company. A local (Ventura) SEO company outsourced a company to build the backlinks they were hired to provide to increase the business owners ranking. Many unqualified SEO companies do this, it is common practice with companies who offer low rates and guaranteed results. What happened next is a nightmare. The webmaster/SEO manager had to give this outsourced company access and passwords to the clients website. The outsourced company claimed the webmaster/SEO manager never paid them and contacted the business owner directly holding his website hostage until they receive payment from him. The outsourced company changed all the passwords and access points to their own and are holding the site ransom, along with 30 other sites the webmaster/SEO manager hired them to build backlinks for. Please read the following article, be sure you KNOW who you hire! Good, reliable SEO is NOT CHEAP. You get what you pay for! There are no quick fixes, no shortcuts, no quick ranking capabilities! We build all our own backlinks and are familiar with the latest requirements of Google and the Panda and Penguin updates. When you're ready, give us a call. We're here to help. "Think about these dangers before you think getting cheap is easy.

#1. Hidden malicious code. If someone is building your website, that means they are creating the code for the site. Do you know what they really put into your website design? Inserting malicious code into website designs to attack users and gather information for hacking at a later date is extremely common. Think about that and you will start to realize many of the dangers of outsourcing website design to cheap overseas contractors.

#2. You are paying for nothing. There are a number of platforms which make building and using a website very easy. WordPress.org, for example, is probably the number 1 platform in the world for website design and build. WordPress is a content management system (CMS), which means a site owner can update and modify site details as easy as using Facebook. Themes are required to create websites. Did you just pay to get a website design and all you got was a slightly modified copy of a free WordPress Theme? This happens all too often.

#3. No consideration of SEO. Everyone who is thinking about a website is starting to realize the importance of search engine optimization. You should consider this, your website design is the foundation of all the SEO you can do in the future. What makes you think someone, somewhere, uneducated, whom you have no idea is who, knows your language like you do? You should know when SEO is wrong it does damage to how your website is found on the web. SEO is not an add-on, it starts with how your website is built.

#4. Credit card fraud. How are you paying your contractor? You must not hand over any credit card details. That is why PayPal is so useful, except it cannot be used to receive payments in those countries of your cheap outsourced ‘professional.’ That is why sites like Freelance and oDesk are so popular. They provide a payment system. This is not the issue. Did your website design provider send you any files during your working process? What malicious code was included in those files, and how much of your information do they have? Are they watching your every keystroke?

#5. Ongoing rip-offs. Everyone in the world has life problems. Have you become the social caretaker of the third world? Have you been duped into believing what your contractor says? Are you making donations to someone you think you know? The world is full of so-called professional contractors who are actually professional at social engineered hacking or convincing you to hand over money.

Think about these things before you hire from overseas. A professional in your country is someone you can rely on, and you can always rely on them." SOURCE: MASHABLE
